Setup additional materials in gmax' material manager. I suggest to give them a meaningful name, like 'light_armor' or 'wood'. Select the faces of your collisionmeshes and press the 'Apply' button in material manager. Select other faces, change to the desired material in m-manager and again press 'Apply'.

Wait so your saying you apply it to the col0-2 not the geometry

Depends on what you need - if your model requires a second texture set you'd

use e.g. ID 2 for this material and apply that to your visible mesh. If you now change the surface ID to 2 it will carry the texture from your 2nd texture set.
