If You Really Want To Spice Up Your Bot Names...

Recommended Posts

Well, as you probably know, the standard way to add bot names is creating a long list of all the generic names you can think of. This is a short little tutorial to offer an alternative solution that cuts down on the effort, gives a more even distribution of names, and prevents the T. Karlsson/R. Edgren Syndrome - where you keep playing against the same bot hundreds of times.

Step 1.

Open up the AI folder of BF2, and the corresponding AI folder for your mod (if it doesn't exist, create it).

Step 2:

Copy BotNames.ai from the mods/bf2/AI/ folder to your mods/<your mod>/AI/ folder.

Step 3:

Delete the contents of the BotNames.ai, you'll be starting fresh.

Step 4:

Create a file called "addname.con" in your mod's AI folder. Open this up as well (so you have both files open).

Step 5:

Find a list of common names (for Operation Dead Dawn I used unisex names since we have a mix of males and females). You need to use your logic when choosing a list of names, if your mod is Russia vs. Ukraine, you'll be wanting Slavic names rather than "John" and "Paul". They can't be team-specific, so try to select names from a midway country (if there is one).

Here's a GREAT place to start. Try a year about 20-30 years ago, since that's when your game characters would have been born most likely.

Step 6:

Now for a tedious and unusual part (but not as tedious as the usual method!).

For each of the names on the list, add this to your BotNames.ai

run addname.con <first name>

Do this for as many names as you have the patience for. In the end you'll have something looking like this:

run addname.con Jessie
run addname.con Jaylin
run addname.con Rory
run addname.con Armani
run addname.con Jamie
run addname.con Justice
run addname.con Dakota
run addname.con Domanique
run addname.con Riley
run addname.con Rowan
run addname.con Casey
run addname.con Peyton
run addname.con Kasey
run addname.con Kamari
run addname.con Skyler
run addname.con Finley
run addname.con Phoenix
run addname.con Harley
run addname.con Emerson
run addname.con Jaidyn
run addname.con Quinn
run addname.con Sidney
run addname.con Hayden
run addname.con Emery
run addname.con Sage
run addname.con Ali
run addname.con Charlie
run addname.con Teagan
run addname.con Payton
run addname.con Jadyn
run addname.con Kayden
run addname.con Skylar
run addname.con Avery
run addname.con Lyric
run addname.con Ariel
run addname.con Jordan
run addname.con Zion
run addname.con Reese
run addname.con Jaiden
run addname.con Alexis
run addname.con London
run addname.con Harper
run addname.con Angel
run addname.con Taylor
run addname.con Kendall
run addname.con Camryn
run addname.con Eden
run addname.con Jaylen
run addname.con Parker
run addname.con Morgan
run addname.con Jaden
run addname.con Cameron
run addname.con Jordyn
run addname.con Marley
run addname.con Jayden
run addname.con Rylee
run addname.con Micah
run addname.con Reagan
run addname.con Bailey
run addname.con Logan
run addname.con Dylan
run addname.con Ryan
run addname.con Addison

(those are unisex names, so don't use those unless you want sexually ambiguous soldiers)

Step 7:

Now you need to find a list of common surnames.

I suggest clicking this link for common surnames.

Step 8:

For each of the names on that list, add the following to your addname.con

aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 <surname>

Eventually you'll get something like:

aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Smith
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Johnson
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Williams
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Jones
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Brown
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Davis
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Miller
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Wilson
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Moor
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Taylor
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Anderson
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Thomas
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Jackson
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 White
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Harris
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Martin
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Thompson
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Garcia
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Martinez
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Robinson
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Clark
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Rodriguez
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Lewis
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Lee
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Walker
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Hall
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Allen
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Young
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Hernandez
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 King
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Wright
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Lopez
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Hill
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Scott
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Green
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Adams
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Baker
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Gonzalez
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Nelson
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Carter
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Mitchell
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Perez
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Roberts
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Turner
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Phillips
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Campbell
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Parker
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Evens
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Edwards
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Collins
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Stewart
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Sanchez
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Morris
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Rogers
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Reed
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Cook
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Morgan
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Bell
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Murphy
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Bailey
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Rivera
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Cooper
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Richardson
aiSettings.addBotName v_arg1 Cox

(That's some of the most common surnames in America, so use that list by all means)

Save your stuff and enjoy your bot names! For Operation Dead Dawn we have 64 surnames and 63 first names, which is 4032 possible name combinations. Now imagine if you'd had to add 4032 names individually and you can see the benefit of this system. Easier to correct typos too. In Georgian Conflict we have 82 surnames and 58 first names (4756 combinations). It's nice to have a different set of bots each time you play, and it's really not much effort at all. Well, have fun!
