BEEX
some interesting news...source "games on net". . new battlefied on friday Alright, that headline's a little bit of a fib - there's no way as major a player as the Battlefield franchise could produce a whole new title and have it get to release day without anyone blowing the whistle. Err. Could it?EA are making a big reveal in London on Friday, apparently announcing a whole new, secret game. What could it be? Well, we know what it's not. The pre-reveal Twitter reveal was made by EA's Ben Cousins (no relation), head of Easy Studios - the team behind the free to play Battlefield Heroes, and as you'd expect, it's specifically not the much-desired Battlefield 3. Nor is it the long-rumoured and utterly mysterious Battlefield Assault: "Flying to London later today to show a new, unannounced Battlefield game to the press. News goes public on Friday. (NOT BF3) Just to confirm - I am NOT going to London to announce any game called 'Battlefield Assault'. That is just a URL EA picked up." We're expecting something along the lines of battlefield heroes 2 - but we're more than willing to be pleasantly surprised. Thoughts? . i hope this is bf with aliens or a mixture of doom 3 with bf. Mach10
Am I going nuts or is that ReFractor Engine 2 again? I understood why Heroes was using that engine, but now that they have Frostbite (now on 2.0), why are they still using ReFractor?
GullyFoyle
Because it's built by the BF Heroes team, on the engine used by BF Heroes? (But really, because a penny saved ...) Edited November 5, 2010 by GullyFoyle

bergerkiller
Hehe someone was just thinking: BF2 is soo low on stocks, let's make it for free! Other guy says: No, we need to get as much money as we can. Let's Re-Publish BF2 for free, but with cash items! Then we can still get some money out of BF2 content No really, when I saw the video I thought it was a BF2 mod, not a new game...lol Little disappointed, why re-publish BF2? Then there are no mods to play, and since bf free2play uses all BF2 maps there aren't even new maps to play...boring I bet it was a one week job in the hopes of some more money
BEEX
im totally stunned theyve done this, there is no way dice/ea are getting money from me,make me pay for a game i already own...pffft!. . maybe they used bf2 assets for engine and network testing purposes, its certainly a fast and smart approach...i hope they do something different with this. GullyFoyle
Think of it this way. Before, BF2 was dead. No one at DICE was working on it, there were no plans for further official patches or maps. Now, BF2 will have a DICE team behind it, and will receive new patches on a regular basis, including an official new map every couple of months or so. Feel free to ignore all of the new uniforms, hats, etc., that they will try to entice you to buy. The BF3 tie-in will probably be the same as the BFBC2 tie-in, a uniform that looks like the one in BFBC2. No one is forcing you to buy this crap. You can still play it as much as you want for free. bergerkiller
Then you do not know how "Cash items" work. First of all, cash items must be better than free items, else no one buys it. Since new "normal" weapons are added, which are stronger, they need to make the cash items stronger too. For example, they give you a free rifle that kills anyone in two headshots. Then they need to make a cash-item capably for at least one headshot. This way, the game is ruled by "cashers", cause they "own" everyone with their strong weapons. They feel strong and think they are the best. In the meantime, regular players either stop with the game or start using cash items. Eventually, the game is filled with players that buy cash items, usually spending over 40 Euros on the game ('cause of course these items last only for a certain period of time). So, don't expect people to ignore all those cash items, once the cash era enters the game, it will last for ever and force you to use these items also. No one is forcing you to buy? Other players force you to buy.
PiratePlunder
Wonder if EA will use this to excuse turning off the BF2 servers at some point in the future? Well you can go and play for free now so no need to play the original BF2 anymore?
Outlawz
Wonder if EA will use this to excuse turning off the BF2 servers at some point in the future? Well you can go and play for free now so no need to play the original BF2 anymore? Wait, why would they do that? I could understand shutting down the stats system and ranked server support, but why kill the game off? UberWazuSoldier
Are you serious? None of you knew about this? This has been in the works for ages haha, there's been promotional material flying around, but it was in Korean so I had to look at it through Google Translate. Anyway, so DICE is helping a Korean company to make a Korean shooter version of BF2. I think this is a good step forward because it shows that DICE is open minded about letting others use the engine. That is, of course, assuming that Battlefield Play4Free is just the new name for "Battlefield Online". If it isn't, then there's going to be another play for free version of BF2 (which is unlikely, so I think they're one in the same). Summary at Planet Battlefield.com o No relation between Battlefield Online. Bfplay4free is a unique game built by the BF Heroes team. PiratePlunder
Thanks gully, I thought what Uber was saying didn't add up especially EA's talk of it being the BF Easy team and not a Korean thing. But I couldn't for the life of me remember the name of the Korean version. I have heard that the Korean Battlefield Online supports up to 100 players. Battlefield Play4Freee only supports 32. May not do it well though and EA couldn't afford to have it be really horrible. Is battlefield online aleady out of beta? There website is in Korean so its impossible to say, but it looks like it may be. http://bfo.pmang.com Not that I'll be touching it but clearly it's not the same thing. UberWazuSoldier
They did playtesting early-mid this year, so it seemed like they were fairly active. Maybe at that point they changed the name and kept it under wraps a little more, who knows.

GullyFoyle
New Ben Cousins Video Interview: http://planetbattlefield.gamespy.com/fullstory.php?id=163748 Interesting new info: --Go live with three maps, and add new maps "as fast as they can". Just like Heroes that went from three, to ten currently. --BF2 compared to "a modern day shooter" is quite strategic, and slow paced. The maps have been tweaked (e.g., reduced in size) so that the pace will be more like Bad Company 2. (Arrgh!)
Freeze
I wonder if these "customization" things will be backwards compatible with BF2.
Cobra_SFX
Someone mentioned this game to me a few weeks ago and i forgot all about it :/ The cheapest option then would be to kill the cashers and take their weapons (there better be pickups - kill the rich kids) I think the cash bit must be involved in BF3 for them to introduce this - and get more people playing in BF2 style, kinda makes sense market-wise Oh well - something new to poke at, can only be a good thing
Freeze
The cheapest option then would be to kill the cashers and take their weapons (there better be pickups - kill the rich kids) If they follow Heroes' style then there won't be kits to pick up.
