just remember that any statics unique to SF or booster packs have no lightmap samples available for them, so you won't be able to gen any shadows for them - for that reason you might be better off sticking with the vanilla statics (or custom ones, if you have access to some)

Thanks and thanks. I'll begin slogging through the volumes and hope the maps my son and I have sketched out come out usable!

How quickly does the difficulty climb when I switch from terrain editing to custom structures/architecture?

hugely. if you're talking about making your own static objects, then you will need to be conversant with 3D modeling, UV-unwrapping and texturing in general, and then you will also need to learn the BF2-specific requirements of these techniques in order to use them in the BF2 game world.

it's not the sort of thing you do on a whim, or master over a weekend. if however you do decide to give it a whirl, 3ds max has a 30-day trial version available so you can see what you're letting yourself in for. it's an expensive purchase to buy the full version, but there is also a free cut-down version called gmax which *i think* can take a static object from concept stage to final export; i use 3ds max so i don't know much about gmax sorry.

you will also need a paint program for texturing; Photoshop is the industry standard, but GIMP is a free alternative which is just as powerful and will serve you well

we are blocking up the downloads thread so it's best if we continue this conversation elsewhere if you need any more details, but all the info you need is already in this forum somewhere.

I recommend making some small maps... 256x2 or 512x2 and get the terrain textured... a couple of flags (US vs Mec) etc and some spawn points for each flag... add a jeep or 2 and a chopper etc...

then you can add grass and trees and do the lightmapping...

making custom statics(buildings) is a bit of a learning curve...

but once you make one building and texture it... it gets a lot easier... like clivewill said... try 3dmax trial or download the free Gmax(little brother of 3dmax...)

and go from there... if you get stuck or have questions post on the forums... and we will try and help you...

heres a link to getting a basic terrain started... with pictures and a test map to practice with...

I've put up a mirror with some of the most useful or hard-to-come-by tools for BF1942 and BF2 here:

http://www.schoeldgen.de/bf1942/tools/

This includes:

Editor42

SamplesMaker

BGFHeightmapTool V2

BF2Ecomap

BF2TPaint

WinRFA

and some other specials. Thanks to the respective creators for their great work ! Most of the original sites are down so i thought it might be helpful . Enjoy. If any of the creators has problems with that, please drop me a PM and i will remove the affected file.

Can someone post mirrors to the bfeditor and related files that are *NOT* fileplanet links. Fileplanet requires a registration /or subscription.

MD5 Generator

Description: Mach10 has programmed a small EXE to generate MD5 content-check files for your mod. If you're concerned about cheating in your mod this program should help you out.

Download link: http://www.mnmcreationsllc.com/games/md5s/MD5Generator.rar

Readme file: http://www.mnmcreationsllc.com/games/md5s/Readme.txt

Related thread: http://bfeditor.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=6988

Does anyone still have this ^ ? I can't find any working links, the version on Filefront is also down. :/

Yeah, i've uploaded the archive to my tool collection:

http://www.schoeldgen.de/bf1942/tools/

but be warned: NEVER simply start this program, it will destroy the MD5's of your BF2 install. Always launch it in a CMD window with the parameter being your mod.

And, i couldn't make it work - it does generate the MD5 files but they don't seem to agree - i've been always kicked from my own server as soon as i tried to make use of the generated MD5's.

If you're successful with it let me know how you did it :P
