Tutorial 1: Export a Airplane from 3ds max 7 to the BF2 Editor

Ok this the first tutorial I've ever made and im still trying to figure some stuff out this is for exporting a plane from

3ds max7 to bf2 editor

First you will need

3ds Max 5,6 or 7

Rexman's BF2 3ds max tools

and the BF2 Editor

Step 1:Starting off

Ok I might make grammar mistakes so try to keep with me first off you load your AIrplane model you wish to export into 3ds max

Scale it appropriately then reset scale. After that setup your textures go to material select BF2 BundledMesh Select you color map and normal map

*** WARNING *** BF2 requires all models to have a normal map. Also make you name your maps properly your color map should have _c after your normal

map should have _b and your shadow should have _s if not expect a crash. After setting up your textures go to step two.

Step 2:Naming Everything appropriately

Ok This is how i do i name everything before hierarchy u can do step 3 then step 2 doesnt really matter this how i do it

After done naming all parts you have to add type of object they are for example this flap i go into bf2 mod tools object

type renamer and use wing (flaps ailerons and rudders are wing type) ok now for landing gear you select go to object renamer

and select landing gear btw LandingGear and hatches are type LandingGear. Ok now your wheels ae spring for example USAIR_A10_Fwheel

go to object renamer and select spring and bingo thats it your done naming your aircraft pieces

Step 3: Hierachy

This can be tricky so pay close attention go to bf2 utilites in bf2 mod tools and go to creation helpers and select locator which you

will name root_bundledMesh make 3 transforms and name them Geom0, Geom1 and Geom2 make 3 new transforms all 3 must be called LOD0 here you put your

LODS. I'll explain this quickly Geom0 is your 1p your cockpit Geom1 is your 3p your main vehicle and Geom2 is your wreck model ok after you set them up in hierarchy

you make the cockpit model child of LOD0 in Geom0 your 3p model you make it child of LOD0 of Geom1 and your wreck model you make child of your LOD0 in Geom2

After this you setup everything else make your gear Front,Left and Right in my case Child of your 3p plane model in Geom1 and you make the wheel the child of

each landing gear. Ok now you make everything everything rudders flaps ailerons elevators child of your 3p vehicle model as well after this you get your col models

and go to creation help selection as nonvis_ while selecting your 3p model and thats it your done.[sorry you must make col models for Geom2 aswell or it will crash the game sorry about that]Here's a screen of what it should like in the end

Step 4: Batch Export

Save your .max to C:BF2RawdataVehicles[your vehicle name]

now go to batch export setup everything your destination would be your mod folder and your rawdata should be C:BF2RawData and thats load up in editor and have

fun a screen of what should be

These are a couple of observations I found when doing our Auto gyro

1 I hate abbreviations so my texture are named

AutoGyro_Main

Autogyro_Bump

AutoGyro_Shadow

These names seem to work fine in game.

Also I believe the centre point in max is the pivot position ingame. I have the balance point of arcraft (usully around 1/3 back from wing leading edge) at the 0.0.0 max position. This means it will rotate around that point ingame.

I'm a bit lost on this. I set up my model, followed the tutorial, got to the final step exporting the batch file, I set my self up the same way you show in your last step. I run the batch and I get nothing created.

What am I missing or is there something missing in your tutorial. How do you have your pathways setup in the utilities?

Of course, I used our mod name instead of yours, etc. and I have my pathway as it is when I do static models which works just fine.

In this instance, I put my max file source just as you did yours and my destination all the way into the vehicle folder label the same as my model.

Thanks, if we don't cross paths tonight. I will be online tomorrow. I am sure I am just missing a simple step.

I am not an expert user of max by any means. I learn by doing. I can get around it without too much trouble. I know enough about max to probably be dangerous with it..hehe.. In any case, I was able to port all our EoD content from our BFV 1.0 release backwards into EoD BF1942. I've done some simple modeling.

I have been able to port in several of our statics into BF2. This is my first attempt at doing a Player Controlled Object/model. Maybe how I set the model up in the beginning has something to do with it. Even if that were the case. I still think something would/should happen when I try to do the batch. Nothing does. Maybe I misuderstood the naming aspect of things. Anyway.......

I've attached some pictures of my hierarchy and here is my pathway.

My hierachy tree looks just like the one here in the tutorial, different names of things of course, but the layout is the same.

Should be more like

You get the picture.

The "..." are just my way of kicking things to the side in this forums not needed in your hierachy,

What is needed is some type of nameing convention infront of your objects, fallowed by a double underscore, then the objects type.

Thanks Dfast for the tip!! I'll rename it.. However, I don't think its the reason why it won't export. I just completed the "My car" tutorial. With the exception of replacing the max scene in the tutorial with my own scene ( I used the EoD_Landrover as my car). I followed it step by step. I get to the end...Everything looks right, etc.

I hit export.. When I do that. I get a folder named for my object "EoD_Landrover". Inside that folder I get a folder labeled "Meshes" but it is empty. I do not get a .con file either. These folders are created where I expect them to be created. There is just nothing there inside of them.

I have hotfix 2 installed in max.. should I have hotfix 1 in as well? I surely am missing something simple and probably stupid.

Thanks for any help anyone can give. Short of sending someone my max scene. I am at a loss.

This is what I get.

I don't know why I am getting the animation in the path. That isn't even the path I have in there.

Wrong path mate. Should be:

c:program filesea gamesbattlefield2modseod_devobjectsvehiclesairmig17

Objects there instead. That might not be causing your problem though.

If you have unwrapped it twice, that's why.

I don't think its been unwrapped twice.. It is however, a pre-existing model that we have had for awhile thats been moved from version to version of Battlefield. It was made for 42. We then converted it and put it into EoD/bfv and now I am trying to get it into BF2.

I will check my path.. what should the raw data be?

It's in your destination and rawdata your destination should be C:Program FilesEA GamesBattlefield 2modsEoD_Dev and your rawdata C:BF2Rawdata btw your mig17.max must be in C:BF2RawdataObjectsVehiclesAirMig17 and you must have your textures folder in there when you export something it automatically read your rawdata and checks what has or hasnt been export it creates a file called

3dsmaxExportDB in your objects folder in your mod which says everything that has been exported that way you wont rewrite try that should fix the problem if not i added you on msn ill help you

Btw notice how it looks for objects rawPath: c:bf2raw datamig17-2b1objects* that why it must be C:BF2Rawdata it searches and cant find anything to export guy there your problem

Why would you guys be placing rawdata for "mymod"

inside "BF2" Wouldnt it make more sence to put mymods rawdata inside mymods. :P Just a complex i have i guess. Nice catch Ice i didnt even see that blorked path. allthough i dont use that batch for a single vechile.

I had a similiar problem where the exporter would create the correct directories but place no files and the maxscript would bring up errors, so I just reinstalled the export tools for max without any hotfixes and they work fine now. That's in max 5.1 I'm using though.

If you're having trouble exporting things as complicated as planes or vehicles you might try porting a knife or a rifle of some kind just to make sure the tools are actually working. Though I guess if you've got statics in the editor that should rule that out.

I can export all but a certain vehicle, that is really annoying too! I think maybe theres a problem with the model but it got all the same stuff as a different object I used... :-|

I finally got it to run, but nothing exported. It did create the file folders. It did not put anything in them.

I was also able to export a Jet with the car tools. Now, I don't know how it is in the editor, as I have not looked yet. Might have to go in and manually edit stuff. I did it just to see if it would work. It did.

I'll figure it out eventually.

Ok sorry for Noob Question But Im stuck at first bit right here

first off you load your AIrplane model you wish to export into 3ds max

Ok My question is how do I load Model or do I have2 have model allready made if so Can sumone post link to were can I make plain ? first and were can I download the tools ? I have downloadit BF2 Gmax I tought thats all I need Thanx for replyes guys :roll:

Thanks I think this is the tutorial I need, however I am confused about the meshes. Oh yeah and I'm using gmax.

Do I need to create my own mesh? If so how?

Can I use a mesh from another airplane? Is so does gmax recognize the .dds format? If it doesn't is there a way of converting the .dds format into something gmax can use?
