I find it really annoying that when I try to load my old sign model, they give me this error "Unknown Class, Stand In" with some kind of number of sorts. I created the old sign model from 3ds Max 8, but after several weeks (well, I haven't loaded the model in a long time), the same program won't let me load it. Is there something I'm missing?

Hmm, i only get that error when i'm trying to open a model from a newer Max version with an older Max ( and consequently , the open fails ) . Are you sure you never touched the scene with a newer Max version ?
If you used a custom plugin while creating the original scene it might help to re-install that plugin .
